BACKGROUND OF GOVI

The Gambia Organization of the Visually Impaired (GOVI) was established in 1991 by an amalgamation of The Gambia Society for the Blind and The Gambia Association of the Blind. GOVI is a national organization for the the visually impaired people, is recognized and registered by the Gambia government. GOVI undertakes a number of activities to help uplift the status of the blind and visually impaired in the Gambia. The supreme aim of GOVI is the prevention of blindness, the re-rehabilitation of the visually impaired and active promotion of the rights to equal opportunities and full participation in all spheres of national development and at all levels for the blind and visually impaired.

WHAT IS GOVI

GOVI is an organisation registered as an NGO by the Gambia Government. It is run by blind people for blind people. GOVI undertakes many activities to uplift the status of the blind and Visually Impaired in the Gambia. The headquarters of GOVI is located at kanifing in the Greater Banjul area and GOVI has 10 branches throughout all the regions in the country.

GOVI OFFERS:

  • Distribution of aid to members around the country.
  • Advocacy on the rights Person with visually impairment.
  • Referral of members to appropriate health facilities.

GOVI SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME​

Conduct regular radio programme to raise awareness on the abilities of blind and visually impaired persons and challenges faced by them.
