GOVI RESOURCE CENTRE FOR BLIND PUPIL’S

The school is founded by a charitable organisation called Govi (Gambia Organisation of the Visually Impaired). It is supported by philanthropists such as Friends of Govi UK, visitors and tourist who visit and help us with all the educational materials that the school needs. These materials includes; Braille machines, Braille papers, tape recorders, cassettes, batteries, stationeries, computers, talking books and sponsor some of the children’s education and teacher training. Government provide support in employing teachers to run and maintain the school, monitor the eaching/learning in the school and provide the daily transportation of these children from their homes to school. Other friends too do offer support by sponsoring these children, providing daily breakfast and lunch, thus, here at the school, education is provided freely to the child upon admitting him/her Most of the staff developed their skills in teaching these children through hands on experience and for that reason more complement is needed to engage the staff capacity development, for there is no such university where special needs education course is conducted in the Gambia. Our constraints at the school are many. As blind education is one of the most expensive forms of education in the world, we always have difficulties in acquiring all our needs regarding the maintenance of educating these children to the target we aim them to reach at. Here in the school, most of these children come from very poor family backgrounds and for that reason we exempt them from paying any cost in sending their children to the school hence they are deprive and preference is given to their sighted peers whom the parents thought would benefit them more in the future. We surely depend on donors who help in making us provide these educational materials that the children need and as such it is not forthcoming. Capacity building among the staff is also a problem.
